The Wei Dynasty, also known as the Cao Wei Dynasty, was a significant period in ancient Chinese history, spanning from 220 to 265 AD. It was established by Cao Pi, the son of the warlord Cao Cao, who effectively ended the Eastern Han Dynasty and claimed himself as the Emperor. The dynasty derived its name from Wei, one of the three kingdoms formed after the downfall of the Han Dynasty.
During the Wei Dynasty, the central authority was firmly established, and a unique governing system known as the Three Excellencies was implemented. This system divided the key responsibilities of the state into three separate offices: Grand Commandant, Minister over the Masses, and Minister of War. The Wei Dynasty upheld Confucian principles and implemented various reforms to consolidate its power, stabilize the society, and promote education.
Despite facing constant military threats from various factions, including the Shu Han and the Eastern Wu kingdoms, the Wei Dynasty was able to maintain its dominance and expand its territory. It fostered advancements in agriculture, technology, and trade, while also promoting cultural and artistic development. The period is renowned for several famous literary works and poetry, such as the Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove.
The Wei Dynasty eventually came to an end when it was overthrown by the Sima family, who established the Jin Dynasty in 265 AD. Nevertheless, the Wei Dynasty left a significant mark on Chinese history, shaping political and cultural aspects of the subsequent periods.

The etymology of the word "Wei" originates from the name of the state established by Cao Cao, a prominent warlord during the late Eastern Han Dynasty. When Cao Cao's son and heir, Cao Pi, declared himself Emperor in 220 CE, he named his dynasty "Wei" after Cao Cao's state.
The character "Wei" (魏) is a combination of two Chinese characters: "gui" (半), meaning "half", and "yi" (戈), an ancient weapon resembling a spear. When combined, these characters symbolize a halberd (a two-handed pole weapon).
