The lender, also known as the respondent, provides the loan amount, called the respondentia loan, to the shipowner, who is referred to as the respondentia borrower. The loan is typically granted to finance the journey or trade of the ship or its cargo.
The terms and conditions of this arrangement, including the interest rate and repayment terms, are negotiated between the lender and the borrower. In case of successful completion of the voyage or trade, the borrower is obligated to repay the loan amount with any accrued interest.
