Prostyle is an architectural term used to describe a type of building or temple that features a row of columns at its front, without any columns at its sides or rear. The word is derived from the Latin term "pro" meaning "before" or "in front of," and "style" referring to a row of columns. This style of construction was commonly employed in ancient Greek and Roman architecture.
In a prostyle building, a portico or porch is formed by a row of columns, commonly of the Doric or Ionic order, at the façade, which is the front-facing part of the structure. The columns are spaced equally apart and often support an entablature, which is a horizontal structure consisting of an architrave, frieze, and cornice. The roof typically extends outwards above the portico, forming a protective canopy.
The prostyle design was valued for its simplicity and elegance, allowing for an impressive frontage that could be easily admired from a distance. It was commonly used in temples, allowing worshippers and visitors to gather in the portico before entering the main sacred area.
