Gigantism is a medical condition characterized by abnormal and excessive growth and development of the body, resulting in an individual attaining an unusually large size compared to their age and genetic background. It is primarily caused by the overproduction of growth hormone (GH) by the pituitary gland during childhood and adolescence, a condition known as hyperpituitarism. This excess production of GH is often induced by a tumor called an adenoma, which is usually found in the pituitary gland at the base of the brain.
The manifestation of gigantism includes the rapid and continuous growth of bones, leading to an elongated stature.
