Antigen Presenting Cells (APCs) are an essential component of the immune system. These cells play a crucial role in recognizing, capturing, processing, and presenting foreign substances, known as antigens, to other cells of the immune system, such as T lymphocytes. APCs are responsible for initiating and coordinating a specific immune response against pathogens, such as viruses, bacteria, or fungi, as well as against other foreign substances, including allergens or cancerous cells.
There are several types of APCs, including dendritic cells, macrophages, and B cells. Each of these cell types has its distinct characteristics and functions within the immune response. Dendritic cells are considered the most potent APCs due to their ability to efficiently capture antigens and present them to T cells to initiate an immune response. Macrophages phagocytize and internalize foreign substances, then display antigen fragments on their surface for recognition by T cells. B cells, on the other hand, are able to capture antigens directly through their B cell receptors and then present them to T cells to generate an adaptive immune response.
When an APC encounters an antigen, it internalizes and processes it, breaking it down into smaller fragments. These antigen fragments are then displayed on the cell surface in association with a molecule called the major histocompatibility complex (MHC). This MHC-antigen complex is recognized by specific receptors on T cells, triggering an immune response.
