Allactite is a mineral that belongs to the pyroxene group, specifically within the clinoamphibole subgroup. It is composed mainly of calcium, magnesium, and aluminum silicates. The term "allactite" has Greek origins, where "allo" means "other" or "different," and "acte" means "shore" or "coast." This nomenclature derives from the mineral's discovery in 1939 along the coast of the Allalin glacier in Switzerland.
In terms of physical properties, allactite typically occurs as prismatic crystals or as granular aggregates. It exhibits a vitreous to pearly luster on the cleavage surfaces and displays colors ranging from pale to dark green, often with a translucent appearance. Allactite has a distinct monoclinic crystal structure with perfect cleavage on two planes.
The mineral is often found in metamorphic rocks, such as serpentinite, and is commonly associated with other minerals like serpentine, chlorite, and talc. Allactite is known for its relatively low hardness, typically ranging between 5 and 6 on the Mohs scale.
Due to its appealing color and unique crystal habit, allactite has garnered some interest as a decorative stone. The word "allactite" is derived from the Greek words "állos", meaning "other", and "aktís", meaning "ray" or "beam". The term was first used in the field of mineralogy to describe a rare copper arsenate mineral discovered in 1879 in the Långban mine in Sweden. The name "allactite" was given because of its unique ability to diffract light, resemble a ray, or act as a beam of light.
