Etymology of TURONIAN
The word "Turonian" derives from the geological term "Turonian Age" or "Turonian Stage", which is a division of the Late Cretaceous period in the geologic timescale. It is named after the region of Touraine in west-central France, near the city of Tours. The French geologist Alcide d'Orbigny first used the term "Touraine" to refer to this specific part of the Cretaceous sequence in the early 19th century. Later, the term "Turonian" was derived from "Touraine" to label the specific geological age or stage.
