Supernatation is a term used in chemistry and physics to describe the process of separating a solid substance from a liquid solution by allowing the solid particles to settle at the bottom of the container. This separation occurs due to the differences in density between the liquid and the solid.
When a mixture is left undisturbed for a period of time, the solid particles within the liquid solution will slowly sink to the bottom of the container. This settling is primarily caused by gravity, as the denser solid is pulled downwards while the less-dense liquid remains on top. The layer of liquid above the settled solid is often referred to as the supernatant liquid.
Supernatation is commonly observed in various scientific and industrial applications. For instance, in the process of making wine, the solid sediments (such as grape skins and seeds) settle to the bottom of the fermentation vessel after the liquid has undergone fermentation. This allows for the clear liquid to be siphoned or decanted off, leaving the sediment behind. Similarly, in chemistry laboratories, supernatation is frequently utilized to separate solid precipitates from solutions during experiments.
