Etymology of FALKLAND ISLANDS
The term "Falkland Islands" has its origins in the name given to the archipelago by British explorer John Strong in 1690. Strong named them the Falkland Islands in honor of his patron, Anthony Cary, the 5th Viscount Falkland, who was also a commissioner of the British Admiralty at the time. The word "Falkland" itself is derived from Falkland Palace, a historic royal palace located in Fife, Scotland.
