Desmoid is a medical term that refers to a rare type of tumor, also known as aggressive fibromatosis. This tumor originates from the connective tissue, typically in the abdominal wall, although it can occur in other areas of the body as well. Desmoid tumors are characterized by their locally aggressive behavior, meaning they grow and invade surrounding tissues but do not spread to distant sites.
These tumors arise from fibroblasts, which are cells responsible for synthesizing the extracellular matrix and connective tissue in the body. Desmoid tumors can occur spontaneously or be caused by genetic alterations, such as mutations in the APC gene in individuals with familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP). They can also develop as a result of trauma or surgery.
Clinically, desmoid tumors are usually solitary, firm masses that do not cause pain, although they may be associated with discomfort or functional impairment due to their size or location. Diagnostic imaging techniques, such as MRI or ultrasound, are used to identify and evaluate the extent of these tumors.
The treatment for desmoid tumors is often challenging, as they tend to show a high rate of recurrence even after surgical removal. Treatment options may include surgical resection, radiation therapy, or systemic therapy with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), hormonal therapy, or targeted therapies. The choice of treatment depends on several factors, including the tumor's location, size, and growth pattern, as well as the patient's overall health and preferences.
