The term "cricoids" refers to the cricoid cartilage, which is a prominent anatomical structure located in the upper portion of the airway. It is a complete ring-shaped structure that forms the base of the larynx or voice box, situated just below the thyroid cartilage commonly known as the Adam's apple. The cricoid cartilage functions to provide structural support to the larynx and protect the glottis and vocal folds.
Anatomically, the cricoids cartilage is situated anteriorly to the esophagus and posteriorly to the thyroid gland. Its sturdy and compact structure contributes to maintaining the integrity and shape of the larynx, ensuring a patent airway for respiration. The narrowest part of the larynx, called the cricoid cartilage prominence, is palpable as a bulge below the laryngeal prominence, allowing for identification during a clinical examination.
In medical procedures or emergencies, the cricoid cartilage serves a crucial role in airway management as it can be used as an anatomical landmark for performing the cricothyroidotomy, a life-saving procedure to establish an emergency airway. This involves making an incision through the cricothyroid membrane, which lies just above the cricoid cartilage, to access the trachea and ensure oxygenation during scenarios where conventional breathing methods are obstructed.
